Election Day Self-care

With stress and anxiety in the air, it may be hard to control your thoughts with the election. Constant tension, arguments, and differing opinions can take a toll on our mental health if we are not careful.

The most helpful thing we can do to take care of ourselves during this time is to focus on what we know we can control.

We may not be able to control: knowing the future, ensuring the election goes fairly, the behavior of others, or either candidate winning.

We can control: our emotional reactions, limiting media consumption, connecting with others that can support us, prioritizing our health, or seeking professional help if we need it.

Focusing our thoughts on things we can control can help give us joy instead of anxiety.

Here are a few ideas of ways to take care of yourself this week:

Limit time on social media or watching the news. If you have noticed that spending time reading the back and forth opinions on the internet is causing you stress, it may be time to set that phone down and get some fresh air.

Spend some time outside. Go on a short walk around your neighborhood or adventure to a nearby park for some time in the sun.

Cook your favorite meal. Turn on some music and enjoy the time spent creating food you love. Maybe try a new recipe?

Schedule time to do something that brings you joy. Read a good book, go on a bike ride, grab your favorite ice cream, enjoy!

Spend time with supportive and loving people. Call a friend that you haven’t talked to in a while, encourage a family member, or tell someone safe how you are feeling.

No matter the outcome of this election, know that there are people that love and support you. Don’t be afraid to share how you are feeling and reach out for help if you need it.
