Summer is often portrayed as a time to rest, escape, and unwind. The season promises long days, sunny skies, and vacations that reset our souls. But for many of us, summer doesn’t always deliver the rest we crave. With kids home from school, calendars packed to the brim, and work deadlines that pile up after even a short vacation, the season can feel more overwhelming than relaxing. Sometimes, even our vacations leave us feeling sort of drained due to the loads of laundry, required planning, and increased expectations. Instead of returning renewed, we can come back to longer to-do lists and a deeper sense of burnout. As if that wasn’t enough, social media can also lead to endless scrolling through photos of friends’ picture-perfect getaways that make us wonder when it’ll be our turn to escape.
But what if we shifted our approach?
Rather than waiting for rest to happen to us, we can intentionally create space for self-care and mindfulness, even in the middle of the chaos. As the temperatures rise and the days stretch out before us, summer offers the perfect opportunity to slow down from within. We can make time to care for ourselves not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.
Here are some gentle, grounded ways to care for your mind, body, and soul this season:
Establish a Self-Care and Mindfulness Routine
- Design a daily rhythm that includes revitalizing practices like meditation, journaling, stretching, or deep breathing. Even 5–10 minutes can make a difference.
- Anchor your day with small rituals whether it be a mindful morning tea, a few quiet breaths before bed, or a screen-free walk at dusk.
- Treat these practices as non-negotiable moments of restoration, not optional luxuries. Rest is not something we have to earn; it is a daily necessity for our well-being.
Embrace the Outdoors Mindfully
- Step outside not just to move, but to notice. Let nature ground you. Feel the warmth of the sun, listen to the sound of a creek or the ocean, and watch the clouds drift.
- Try mindful activities like barefoot walking in the grass, outdoor yoga, or simply sitting quietly under a tree. Let the natural world remind you to slow down.
- Spend some time enjoying the Refuge Center’s outdoor spaces before leaving after a session.
Practice Presence and Gratitude
- When life feels too full, mindfulness brings us back to now. Pause. Breathe. Ask yourself: “What do I need in this moment?”
- Start or end your day by writing down or sharing with someone three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude helps shift your perspective and center your thoughts on what’s good, even in busy and hard seasons.
Disconnect to Reconnect
- Take intentional breaks from technology. Put your phone away during meals with loved ones, turn off notifications, or schedule social media-free days. Consider leaving your device in the car when showing up for a session.
- Reconnect with what inspires you: deep conversations, books that captivate, music that calms, or a hobby you left behind in the business.
This summer, give yourself permission to rest in all ways, physically, emotionally and mentally. Whether your days are slow or packed, remember that peace isn’t found in the perfect vacation, but it is cultivated in small, intentional moments of presence. You don’t have to wait for everything to slow down. You can slow down within.
