Eating Disorders/Body Image
How we see our bodies can deeply shape how we see ourselves.
Eating disorders affect several million people at any given time. They are characterized by disturbances in eating behaviors and are often accompanied by distressing thoughts and emotions related to food, body image, and control.
Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other specified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED). Each of these conditions presents differently, but all can significantly impact emotional, physical, and relational well-being.
Eating disorders are about more than food. They are often connected to deeper struggles involving self-worth, emotional regulation, trauma, perfectionism, or the desire for control during difficult life circumstances. Because eating disorders involve both behavioral patterns and emotional experiences, effective treatment focuses on addressing both aspects together.
At Refuge, therapy for eating disorders supports individuals in exploring the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors connected to food and body image in a compassionate and non-judgmental space. Counseling can help identify underlying emotional patterns while building healthier coping strategies and more supportive ways of relating to food and the body.
Treatment may also include addressing nutritional concerns and supporting clients in restoring balance physically and emotionally. Through this process, individuals can begin developing a healthier relationship with food, greater self-understanding, and a stronger sense of personal well-being.
Your worth is not defined by food, weight, or appearance.
With the right support, individuals can move toward a healthier relationship with food, their body, and themselves—one that reflects care, balance, and self-compassion.
