Self Injury

Why Do We Harm Ourselves?

Self-injury (SI) is the act of deliberately destroying body tissue, at times to change or manage a feeling. This has become more popular lately, especially in adolescents and teens. The causes and severity of self-injury can vary. Some forms may include: picking & puling skin and hair, burning, cutting, hitting, bruising, biting & tattooing and piercing. Those who have difficulty talking about their feelings may show their emotional tension, physical discomfort, pain and low self-esteem with self-injurious behaviors. A few ways that may help an individual cope with feelings leading to self-harm would be: practicing breathing exercises, journaling, drawing, thinking about positive images, or talking with someone you trust.
If you or someone you know are dealing with SI, visit www.selfinjury.com or www.TWLOHA.com for more information. You may also contact The Refuge Center for Counseling to speak with a counselor.
