I recently read an article in which former professional ice skater Scott Hamilton was interviewed. For the third time since 2004, this Olympic gold medalist is battling a brain tumor. His words within the article brought me feelings of inspiration, awe, and intrigue. Mr. Hamilton maintains a positive attitude and is once again facing this battle head-on. He stated in the article that he gains his strength to persevere from his Christian faith.
I have a friend, Becky, who is quite possibly one of the most caring and compassionate individuals I know. She is a wife and the mother of two beautiful young girls. Similar to Mr. Hamilton, she also has had to endure the fight against cancer. After being in remission for some time, she recently learned the cancer has returned for a third time and is now Stage 4. She continues to have a positive attitude and a determination to fight as hard as she can against this unrelenting disease.
As I reflect on these two individuals, I question myself: would it be possible for me to have such an outlook as they do? Would I be able to persevere and fight again for a third time after having overcome twice already? I don’t know that I have the answer, but I do know I am inspired by each of them and thousands like them. Because of their stories, I know it is possible to persevere no matter how many times we get knocked down.
I do not know how these two specific stories will turn out, but the positive impact they have already had on me and countless others will be everlasting. We all suffer our own battles with various issues, but given the appropriate support and help, we can persevere and overcome the war.
