MUSIC SPEAKS
At The Refuge Center, we often use music as a part of therapy. Music has a way of expressing our feelings and mirroring our moods. Lyrics and melodies have the ability to change the way we feel. A simple song is able to transform one from sad to glad or lethargic to energetic. When we can’t seem to find the words and think no one could possible know what we feel inside, you hear a song and think “Someone else understands.”
Research has shown that music has a profound effect on your body and psyche. Music can also be used to bring a more positive state of mind, helping to keep depression and anxiety at bay. Music has also been found to bring many other benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, boost immunity, ease muscle tension, and more. With so many benefits, it’s no surprise that so many are connecting with music and seeing it as an important tool to help the body in staying (or becoming) healthy.
So, what music speaks to you? Here are the lyrics to a song called “I’m Not Alright” by Sanctus Real that you may connect with.
If weakness is a wound that no one wants to speak of
Then “cool” is just how far we have to fall
And I am not immune, I only want to be loved
But I feel safe behind the firewall
Can I lose my need to impress?
If you want the truth I need to confess
I’m not alright, I’m broken inside, broken inside
And all I go through, it leads me to You, it leads me to You
Burn away the pride
Bring me to my weakness
’til everything I hide behind is gone
And when I’m open wide with nothing left to cling to
Only You are there to lead me on.
‘Cause honestly, I’m not that strong.
I’m not alright, I’m broken inside
Broken inside
And all I go through, it leads me to You
It leads me to You
And I’ll move,
and I’ll move,
and I’ll move,
Closer to You
I’m not alright, I’m not alright
I’m not alright
… that’s why I need You.
