Staff Therapist/Neurofeedback Therapist

Valéria Hyer, M.MFT is a Staff Therapist and Neurofeedback Therapist at The Refuge Center. She earned her master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Lipscomb University and a BA in English from Middle Tennessee State University. She is also a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). She believes that our lives are intricate pieces of a story worthy of redemption and love.

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Valéria served the immigrant community in Nashville, where she taught English and worked as a healthcare advocate. Her work with this population taught her that joy is possible in the midst of the most traumatic events and that human resilience is a gift. She is also fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

She has found that healthy human connection and attachment can bring much healing to a broken heart. By seeking internal reconciliation, one can reconcile with the external world and personal relationships. Valéria incorporates Internal Family Systems, play therapy, somatic and experiential interventions to her practice. She is EMDR certified and works with all types of trauma. Through a systemic lens, Valéria also uses Restoration Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Polyvagal Theory, Gottman method and Narrative Exposure Therapy to help teens, adults, couples, and families. Further, she is a QPR gatekeeper instructor and seeks to build secure attachment through deep bonding and connection.
