Now that we have a few weeks under our belts, have you been feeling nervous about being back in school? I am talking to you, kiddos! I am talking to you, parents!

My background is in elementary education, and one of my absolute favorite books to read on the first day of school is First Day Jitters. The book follows the main character and their “jitters” leading up to the first day of school. Spoiler Alert: it turns out to be the teacher! This cute story normalizes the fear of going back to school.

There are fun activities that you can do with your child that go along with this book. For example, create “jitter juice” (there are printable labels online if you simply search for them in google or teacherspayteachers.com). The secret recipe is to mix Sprite and Hawaiian Punch.

Some other great book recommendations for kids are “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” and “The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes.”

If these feelings are overwhelming or if your child is having a tough time transitioning to a new year, please reach out to us at 615-591-5262. We have several counselors in our Children and Teen Program that are equipped to walk with your family during times of change.
